Amena's journey is one of resilience, transformation, and service. From dreaming of becoming a fighter pilot as a child to building a successful career in television and film, she has continuously followed her passions while remaining dedicated to helping those in need.
Childhood Dream of Becoming a Pilot
Amena revealed that her first dream was not acting or directing—it was flying. As a young girl, she wanted to become a fighter pilot and was determined to pursue a career in aviation.
She applied twice for admission, hoping to turn her dream into reality. However, both applications were unsuccessful because there were no proper accommodation facilities available for women at that time. While the rejection was disappointing, it did not stop her from exploring other opportunities.
During her academic years, she studied engineering while actively participating in theater productions. What began as a hobby soon opened new doors and eventually led her toward the world of acting and media.
Entering the Entertainment Industry
Amena's involvement in theater introduced her to television and broadcasting. She started working in various areas of media, including acting, news anchoring, editing, and production.
She explained that she worked extensively behind the scenes during the analog era, learning technical aspects of television production that many people never get to experience. These early years helped her gain valuable skills and a deeper understanding of storytelling.
Over time, her interest shifted toward directing. The creative freedom and leadership involved in directing fascinated her, and she gradually built a successful career in that field.
Today, Amena considers directing her greatest passion. She described it as a role that fulfills the same excitement she once felt about flying airplanes.
Directing Became Her "New Cockpit"
One of the most memorable moments from the podcast was when Amena compared directing to flying.
She said that directing allows her to satisfy her childhood desire to be in control, make decisions, and guide a journey—much like a pilot does in a cockpit. She affectionately referred to directing as her "new cockpit."
Having spent nearly three decades in the film and commercial industry, Amena has accumulated a wealth of experience. Her 28-year career has given her opportunities to work on numerous projects while constantly evolving as a creative professional.
Despite her success in entertainment, she believes that her career ultimately led her toward a greater purpose: serving humanity.
Family Influence and Early Exposure to Charity
Amena credits much of her humanitarian mindset to her parents.
She grew up in a household where helping others was considered a normal part of life. Her father was a doctor who dedicated himself to serving people, and her mother also participated in charitable activities.
Because she spent so much time with her father, Amena became familiar with medical and forensic work from a young age. Watching him care for patients left a lasting impression on her and helped shape her values.
As she grew older, those lessons stayed with her. Eventually, volunteer work became an essential part of her identity.
Why Helping Others Feels Natural
During the podcast, Amena explained that many people view charity work as something extraordinary, but she sees it differently.
According to her, helping people has become as natural as everyday activities such as eating, drinking, or sleeping. She believes that once someone develops the habit of serving others, it becomes a permanent part of their character.
She shared that volunteering gives her a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Whenever she helps someone in need, she learns something new and grows emotionally.
Reflecting on her experiences, she said that every meaningful interaction with another person leaves a positive impact and helps individuals become better versions of themselves.
Witnessing Tragedy During Disaster Relief Efforts
A significant part of Amena's volunteer work has involved responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
She recalled arriving in an earthquake-affected area shortly after the disaster struck. The scenes she witnessed were heartbreaking.
One image remains vivid in her memory: a man carrying a young girl who had been injured. A large piece of debris from a collapsed building was lodged between her toes. The sight highlighted the immense suffering that people were experiencing in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Despite difficult conditions, volunteers from across Pakistan came together to assist affected communities. Amena praised the dedication of students, religious leaders, rescue workers, and ordinary citizens who traveled long distances to help.
She particularly remembered the commitment shown by around 200 students from Peshawar University who participated in relief efforts alongside many other volunteers.
Even while fasting during Ramadan, aid workers continued walking for hours to reach remote areas and provide assistance to those who desperately needed support.
Feeling Safe While Serving Communities
Amena also discussed the issue of safety during volunteer missions.
Contrary to common concerns, she said she always felt protected while traveling throughout Pakistan. Whether she was filming documentaries or participating in relief operations, local communities treated her with kindness and respect.
She shared that people often looked after her and other volunteers, making sure they were safe during challenging journeys through mountains and isolated regions.
Her experiences reinforced her belief that compassion and generosity remain strong qualities within Pakistani society.
A Story That Left a Lasting Impact
Among the many people she met during her humanitarian work, one elderly woman left a particularly strong impression on her.
The woman was living alone in difficult conditions while her son remained hospitalized. Her legs were severely infected and required medical treatment, yet she refused to seek help because she feared losing the small place she called home.
Determined to support her, Amena and her team traveled long distances every day to bring food and assistance.
The experience reminded her that poverty often forces people to make impossible choices between health, shelter, and survival.
Concerns About Hunger and Child Malnutrition
Amena also expressed concern about the devastating effects of floods and poverty on vulnerable communities.
She highlighted the struggles faced by children who do not receive enough nutritious food. Referring to observations made by workers from the Kiran Foundation, she explained that many children suffer from severe malnutrition, often showing signs such as swollen stomachs caused by prolonged hunger.
She described stories of mothers who lacked even the most basic cooking resources and sometimes resorted to desperate measures simply to feed their families.
For Amena, these realities are painful reminders of the challenges still faced by countless people across the country.
A Call for Greater Community Involvement
As the conversation came to a close, Amena emphasized the importance of collective action.
She noted that government institutions, the military, charitable organizations, and countless volunteers continue to provide valuable support during emergencies and humanitarian crises. However, she believes there is still room for greater public involvement.
Having actively volunteered since the pandemic, she hopes more people will discover the fulfillment that comes from helping others. According to her, even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
Amena Khan's story is a powerful example of how professional success and humanitarian service can go hand in hand. Through her work in entertainment and her dedication to volunteerism, she continues to inspire others to pursue their passions while contributing positively to society.
