Reports say Patekar collapsed from a heart attack at his home in Goa and was quickly taken to the hospital.
His friend later called him and reached his home around 4 a.m., when the actor was sweating and slowly losing consciousness, said Dr. Salkar.
He said Patekar's caretaker was sent to the hospital to arrange an ambulance. When emergency responders arrived, they started giving "cardiac massage" because the actor was completely "unresponsive."
"Patekar was moved to Manipal Hospital around 4:20 or 4:30 a.m., where doctors kept trying to revive him, but they couldn't save him," he added.
According to Salkar, a police case was needed because the death was treated as a "medico-legal case (MLC)," and he added that Patekar's body was taken to "Goa Medical College for a post-mortem" exam.
He said the actor's family was not at the hospital, while his friends and a caretaker were with him.
Patekar started his acting career in 1978 with the film Guman and stayed connected to the film industry for many decades.
He acted in many hit movies like Krantiveer, Paranda, Welcome, and Ab Tak Chappan. In his career, he won three National Film Awards and got the Padma Shri in 2013.
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher wrote a heartfelt message on X to honor his friend Patekar, calling him "one of the finest actors and human beings in Indian cinema." Kher said he found out about Patekar's death right after finishing a show, and it was hard to keep meeting people while taking in the sad news.
"I will miss you, my friend. Your warmth. Your hugs. Your amazing performances," he wrote, adding that he would remember Patekar through his movies and wished he could give him one last hug.
