Janhvi Kapoor speaks against AI deepfakes and calls for women’s consent

Indian actor Janhvi Kapoor has spoken out against a fake video made with AI that changed footage from her song Chuttamalle in the film Devara: Part 1. She called this use of her image without permission a "deeply violating" act and said it shows a bigger problem that women face.

The changed video, which spread widely online, took footage of Kapoor from the 2024 movie and showed her in a sexual way that was not in the original. This event has caused strong reactions in the Indian film industry and raised new worries about how AI is being misused to target women.

Kapoor broke her silence about this on Instagram, saying the issue is not just about the video of her. She said that misusing technology shows a bigger problem with how women's bodies, choices, and limits are treated.

"The criminal misuse of technology to treat women as objects and share fake content without permission is deeply violating, almost like sexual assault. Almost every woman in my industry has faced something like this. And women everywhere are facing it more and more," she wrote.

According to Kapoor, consent should not be seen as complicated or open to different meanings. A woman's choices about her body, looks, and personal limits are only hers, no matter what she wears or what choices she made before.

She also said that the growing threat of AI-made abuse adds to the physical and social pressures women already deal with. In her view, technology has created another way for women to be harassed and have their privacy invaded.

She spoke about the bigger picture of what it means to be a woman—being watched, judged, always negotiating for safety, and feeling like our personal limits are often treated as open to debate. That danger has now moved into the online world, she said.

Kapoor also asked for a bigger shift in how society thinks, saying the burden of protecting themselves from harassment should not fall only on women or their families. Instead, she said, society must question the beliefs that make people feel they have the right to cross someone else's boundaries.

The actor thanked her Devara co-star Jr NTR for speaking out against the fake video. NTR had already condemned the clip and said he would take legal action against those who made and shared it.

The issue has once again pointed out the growing problems caused by AI deepfakes, especially when the technology is used to create intimate or embarrassing content about people without their knowledge or permission.

Kapoor ended by stressing the importance of recognizing that women have the right to control their own images, bodies, and boundaries.

"I hope everything happening around us right now pushes those who take part in any kind of harassment to look inward. Is it really too much for a woman to ask to simply be treated and seen as a human being? Her body, her image, her boundaries, her choice".

Her message came down to one basic idea: women should be treated as people who have the right to control their own images, bodies, and boundaries.
