Aamir Khan to receive Screen Icon Award at Singapore film festival

Bollywood star Aamir Khan was going to get the Screen Icon Award at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival. At the same event, he was also set to join director Ashutosh Gowariker for a special screening to mark 25 years of the movie Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India.

According to Gulf News, Khan was going to be honored for his work in Asian cinema with this award, which celebrates actors whose films have had a big creative impact on the region's movie industry.

Khan was also set to take part in the festival's "In Conversation With" program, giving audiences a chance to hear him speak as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The Singapore International Film Festival is planned to run from October 21 to November 1, with the 2026 event happening earlier than usual.

Celebrating 25 Years of Lagaan

Released on June 15, 2001, Lagaan became one of the most ambitious Hindi films of its time. Directed by Gowariker and starring Khan, the movie mixed a historical story set during British rule in India with the unusual backdrop of a cricket match.

The film's trip around the world became a key moment in Indian cinema when Lagaan was chosen as India's pick for the Oscars and got a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

So, its anniversary showing in Singapore marked 25 years since the film helped bring a big Hindi movie to a much wider global audience.

According to Gulf News, Khan had gone to a screening at the London Indian Film Festival in July, where he talked about Lagaan's success.

"As Lagaan turns 25, it's hard to find words for what this journey has meant. We made the film with a lot of faith, passion, and honesty, never expecting the kind of love it would get and keep getting all these years later," he said.
